In looking at potential designs, I widened my approach by researching different healthcare facilities but also looking at non-healthcare structures too. My main focus was looking for designs that might inspire a mental health facility. I looked at a mixture of building types, whilst trying to ensure that the selected styles aligned with my key principles of creating a warm, functional, and inviting environment. By including a wider scope of building designs, I wanted to avoid the traditional approach that healthcare facility designers might typically take and instead look at more innovative and potentially “human-centred” styles. Post-Covid, studies on the impact of natural and built environments on health are leading to mental health facility designs that provide a more homelike and inviting atmosphere.
